Facts about North Carolina
Population: Approximately 8.1 million according to the 2000 census (11th in the nation).
Largest City: Charlotte with 550,000 residents and over 1.4 million in the metro area.
Area: North Carolina covers approximately 52,000 square miles and is the 28th largest state in area.
Interesting fact: North Carolina has more climate variation that any state east of the Mississippi. The climate in our mountains resembles that of southern Canada, while parts of the coast may be frost free some winters.
Palm Natives: As stated above, North Carolina is home to two palm species: the Cabbage palm (Sabal palmetto) and the Dwarf Cabbage palm (Sabal minor).
Facts about my hometown, Winston-Salem
Population: 185,000 (city); 1.2 million (metro). This area formed by the cities of Winston-Salem, Greensboro, and High Point is commonly called the "Piedmont Triad."
Interesting fact: Salem was founded in 1766 by the Moravians; Winston was started as the new seat for the county of Forsyth in 1849. The two merged into one city in 1913.For more information go to the "Visit My Hometown" page.
