Winston-Salem
Winston-Salem is a medium sized city (pop. 185,000 city; 1,200,000 metro) located in the northwest piedmont area of North Carolina. The elevation varies from 750 to 950 ft. The elevation at my house is approximately 760 ft.Salem was founded in 1766 as a Moravian community. Winston was founded in 1849 as the seat of the newly-formed county of Forsyth. The two merged in 1913. Winston-Salem is most famous for cigarettes and the R. J. Reynolds company. In fact, the names of their "Winston" and "Salem" brands are a reflection of their roots in this community. Winston-Salem, along with the cities of Greensboro and High Point, make up the "Piedmont Triad". Greensboro is 27 miles east and High Point is 19 miles southeast.
