Here are some shots of palms and plants growing at Whitaker Elementary School in Winston-Salem, NC.

Dalton Folwell Gardens shortly after planting in March 1999.
One of my students, seven-year-old Dalton Folwell, was hit by a car and killed while boarding his bus on May 17, 1999. My class and I dedicated the garden we planted in his memory and renamed it "The Dalton R. Folwell Memorial Gardens."
Dalton's Garden as of July 2002
What a difference three short years can make! We are supposed to be getting a new school building so I'll have to move all this stuff. HELP!!
SPEPS Grant Area
This area was planted in March 2000, after I'd received the SPEPS Hometown Grant. The tallest palm has since grown to over six feet. All of these plants will need to be moved when our new school is built.

Trachycarpus fortunei
This plant, originally only one-and-a-half feet tall, has been in ground since 1997. I haven't protected it so it received some light damaged the first couple of winters. It's now over 10 feet tall and has proven to be a fast grower. This photo is from July 2002.
